Polka Dots and Crop Tops

One of my favorite patterns is polka dots and I cannot seem to get enough of them!  When I saw this adorable crop top from Shein I knew it was perfect for summer and to transition into fall.  It was also the perfect top to attempt to make crop tops appropriate for a 36-year-old mother! I decided to pair it with a high-waisted maxi skirt.  I have found when wearing this top that high-waisted items make it more comfortable for me to wear.  Do you wear crop tops?  If so how do you wear them?  I would love some more ideas on how to style this adorable top!

Flirting With Fall

Outfit Details || Dress: c/o Meli Mei || Necklace: Meli Mei || Booties: Toms via Nordstrom || Bracelets: c/o Centered Jewelry || Sunglasses: Loft ||

I absolutely love everything about fall!  I love the cool mornings and warm afternoons, sitting around a fire and roasting marshmallows, and watching football on tv.  Not to mention all the apples and pumpkin desserts!!!!  I may or may not have a countdown for the release of Pumpkin Spice Latte from Starbucks.  Most of all though I love fall fashion!  Once school begins, I start dreaming of boots, scarves, and cozy layers.  Unfortunately, in Indiana we have quite awhile before we are ready for all those layers I am dreaming of!

To satisfy my fall fashion cravings I have began to flirt around with fall styles!  With the temps still warm I am pulling in fall inspiration with rich tones.  I tend to gravitate towards mustard yellow, burgundy, navy, and olive green.  These colors are in abundance in my closet and what I gravitate towards when shopping.

A sweet friend of mine introduced me to the owner of a fabulous new boutique in town.  I was excited to be invited to the soft opening of Meli Mei, which is located in a trendy area in downtown Fort Wayne in the City Exchange.  Fall was in full effect at Meli Mei.  My fall fashion loving heart was happy!

This dress caught my eye and I couldn’t wait to try it on!  The rich fall colors along with the fun floral pattern drew me.  The fun and flirty ruffle along the neckline was a unique touch that made this dress stand out to me.  I knew I wanted to pair it with my new Tom’s Peep Toe Booties I had picked up at the Nordstrom Sale.  I love the fun and flirty vibe from the entire look!   It was one of those looks that had me feeling confident from the moment I stepped out the door!

I added a natural stone necklace that I couldn’t resist from Meli Mei.  It was just enough to add a touch of detail to the entire look.  As I have been drawn to my Centered Jewelry bracelets lately those were a definite must to finish off this entire look.  If you are local you need to stop and check out Meli Mei this weekend for their grand opening.  If you are from out of town check out their Instagram page.  You will not be disappointed.  I cannot wait to make a trip back to visit again soon!

Thanksgiving Looks Part 2: Comfy Casual

Can you think of anything better than leggings to wear on Thanksgiving?  Leggings when paired with the right pieces can look put together and classic!  Plus it gives you a little more room to have dessert at Grandma’s house!  If you have a casual Thanksgiving this look is for you!

This top from Amazon is less than $15.00 and is the perfect tunic length.  It has become a closet staple and has been in high rotation since last fall.   If you have Amazon Prime you can get it in time for Thanksgiving!  I love pairing it with my favorite pieces to come up with a comfy look that is perfect for any occasion.  For school, I would add a pair of black jeans to make it a little more work appropriate.

Thanksgiving Looks Part 1- Preppy Layers

With the holidays quickly approaching I am always in search of what to wear!  There are so many family gatherings and functions that I get to be creative.  I decided to share some of my favorite looks for the holidays over the next few weeks.  I got the opportunity to have a photo session with my cousin from Lynsee Cheviron Photography.  If you are looking for amazing family pictures you need to check her out!

This week’s look is preppy layers.  When in doubt throw on a button up and layer with a sweater or cardigan.  This blue gingham top is a closet staple.  It is one of my go to pieces that can be styled with so many different things.  I love the way that it looks with this burgundy sweater.  The colors are perfect for Thanksgiving or Christmas.

When I layer sweaters and button ups I like to keep my jewelry closer to my neckline.  I am not a fan of pendents with this type of look.  I love adding a hint or a lot of sparkle to add a little dressing.  This necklace from Wink of Pink is the perfect addition.

Overall, this entire look is comfy and semi-casual.  If you want to dress up this look add a pair of skinny dress pants or boot cut trousers.  Would you wear this look to a holiday gathering?  Most of the pieces in this look are old.  I linked similar pieces and styles.

Easy Pattern Mixing!

I absolutely love pattern mixing.   When I first started, I began with patterns that I felt the most comfortable with.  Stripes are the easiest base to start with when you are pattern mixing.  If you don’t have a great striped tee or tunic you need to add one to your closet!  Stripes look great with just about anything!  My simplest tip for pattern mixing is start with a  striped top, and layer scarves. Scarves are the easiest way to add some dimension to any outfit.   Here are some more simple ways to ease yourself into pattern mixing.

photo1-2

  1.  Pick two different prints that share a single color or two. In this look both the stripes and the plaid in the scarf are black.  The scarf also has a touch of cobalt, but blends into the color palette.  My favorite color combo for mixing prints is black and white, and is the easiest to mix.

2.  Find prints of different scales or sizes.  One print will then dominate and while the other will act as an accent.  If you are still a little uneasy about mixing a bolder pattern try breaking up the printed pieces by layering a solid on top.  This will help make the pattern mixing seem a bit more subtle.  I like to add a cardigan or jacket to help break up busy looks.

3.  When all else fails add animal print!  I love animal print to the point that it is now a neutral in my closet!  I love pairing just about any print with animal print for an easy look.

What is your favorite way to mix patterns?  I would love to hear what your go to patterns are!
